Description
Crushed Charcoal is one of the most valuable components in any bioactive enclosure or springtail culture. Known for its exceptional absorption, filtration, and antimicrobial properties, it helps create a healthier, cleaner, and more balanced environment for both plants and animals. Whether you’re building a terrarium for reptiles, maintaining amphibian vivariums, housing isopods, or culturing springtails, crushed charcoal plays a crucial role in overall ecosystem stability.
In bioactive setups, crushed charcoal helps purify the substrate by absorbing excess moisture, odours, and organic waste. This prevents harmful bacteria from building up and reduces the risk of mould growth, making it ideal for humid environments. Because charcoal is porous, it provides beneficial surface area where springtails and microfauna can breed and thrive. It also improves substrate drainage and aeration, keeping the soil light, airy, and long-lasting.
When used in springtail cultures, crushed charcoal becomes the primary medium for population growth. Springtails feed on the biofilm that develops on charcoal surfaces and lay their eggs on the surface, making it the preferred material for building dense, thriving cultures. Charcoal does not break down, remains mould-resistant, and keeps cultures clean and easy to maintain.
Additionally, crushed charcoal is safe for all reptiles, amphibians, plants, microfauna, and invertebrates. It can be mixed into substrate blends, used as a bottom-layer additive, or used on its own for culturing springtails. It also helps buffer toxins and maintain a stable micro-ecosystem—making it a staple in any bioactive keeper’s toolkit. This also makes it ideal for planted terrariums.
